Celebrating My Partners 6 & a half decades
Celebrating birthday’s, particularly my own, over the years has come with a certain level of discomfort. Not because I am adverse to getting a year older, actually I feel that is blessing, mostly because my back story has a lot of adversity and drama around birthday’s.
Without all the unnecessary details, birthdays can put my worthiness front and centre and have me squirming to feel I deserve to be celebrated. Lucky for me they come around every year so I get more opportunities to let that s*** go.
Like most of us . I am a work in progress and will honour my life long commitment to continue to meet the edges of discomfort when they arise because I know what’s on the other side is beautiful freedom.
Reaching 65 is somewhat of a milestone and as Mikes past hasn’t been filled with much honouring of him I really wanted to express my love and gratitude for him on this birthday. On reflection, I realise I wanted him to feel the way I would like to feel on my birthday, valued, loved, worthy.
He requested a Japanese lunch so I got some recommendations and booked a traditional seating table (Recessed Floor Seating (Horigotatsu)), at Sono Japanese restaurant, Portside Brisbane. Shoes off and not so elegantly getting to our seats on the floor all adds to the experience.
We were met by a statue of a Samurai Warrior as we entered the reception and were greeted warmly. When taken through to our table the expansive view of the river opened up which only enhanced the already tranquil decor complete with vases filled with realistic looking artificial cherry blossoms.
The wait staff were amazing and so deeply respectful, it really felt like a beautiful honouring just to be there.
I love the the ritual and reverence of eating beautiful food in lovely locations. Its one the reason I love to eat out. Because we slow down, we face each, there are no phones, except for the picture taking and we really connect.
We shared the salmon carpaccio for entree, which was heavenly and my Salmon Teriyaki was melt in my mouth delectable, I ate slowly so as to enjoy the whole experience.
As I dont eat red meat I did not try Mike’s Sono Style braised beef, he said it fell apart in his mouth. Delicious.
I declined dessert as the only gluten free, dairy free option was a sorbet and I was nicely satisfied with my meal.
Mike ordered the Sesame Brulee which they thoughtfully put a candle in the Black Sesame Ice-cream so he could make a wish.
The entire experience was nourishing and heart warming.
I would definitely go again if I was feeling like I wanted a sense of occasion.
bo pro-feet.
